In April 2007, I joined Metromix Los Angeles as Managing Editor and Bars & Clubs Editor. It was a personality-driven lifestyle website and weekly print product published by the Los Angeles Times Media Group.
In preparation of the July launch date, I worked closely with the editor to build an infrastructure from scratch. This included workflow systems, editing schedules, production plans and deadlines. We hired, trained and supervised 25+ contributing editors, producers, freelancers and interns.
We launched the website shortly after with 7,000 local venue listings, feature content and multimedia.
During this time, I also contributed to the development of Metromix’s web functionality. I tracked defects for debugging the site and suggested enhancements to improve user experience. Later, I weighed in on homepage and photo gallery redesigns as well as blog development.
As Bars & Clubs editor, I built the section into the most popular channel, accounting for approximately 25% of all site traffic (seven sections total). This meant planning, writing and programming content, with minimum of five new features per week for print and web (reviews, round-ups, neighborhood guides, profiles, photo galleries, events calendar, web videos, blog posts, weekly column, etc.), finding innovative ways of repackaging content to keep older stories fresh, ensuring the listings database was always up-to-date and accurate, and social networking.
